One thing we need to accept that phones are getting cheaper and cheap phones are getting better. Look at the phone and companies that are came out in last two years, and their value for money phones.

First let me explain you what is flagship, midrage phone and flagship killer.
Flagship means the phone which represents the brand. Eg - Note series for Samsung.
Mid range phones, as then name explains you the phone which cost not more than 22k and not less than 9k. Eg - Galaxy series for Samsung.
And lastly the phone which is not a midranger but have the ability to compete with a flagship is known as flagship killer. Eg - OnePlus

If you are buying phone just for status then a sixteen thousand 3-4 year flagship is more than enough for you but if you are heavy user like a gamer, businessman, entrepreneur or just a student like me midrange of flagship killer is best for you.

But to do comparison phone is divider in two parts SOFTWARE and HARDWARE.

Software - 

Software update for midranger are going to last more than a old flagship. Even a two year phone can hang while doing some important work. And this is not it new applications and new update of application won’t support.

Hardware -
In the terms of hardware old flagship can win in the premium feel but the present midranger will have a latest trendy design. In terms of processor it depends on which phone you are comparing same goes for camera and other stuff.
